Too many managers hire out of desperation (up against a deadline) instead of actively scouting talent and creating a pool to pull from when the need arises. Evaluate the different roles in your business and identify what strengths are required. Then pay attention to people you interact with throughout your day, week, or year.
Pay attention to people’s attitude and presence in your interactions. Do they go above and beyond in customer service? Did they help you find the right product to fit your needs? Are they consistent in creating great content? Do they have help people advance in their careers?
Training for technical skills is easy. Training for soft skills (communication, attitude, work ethic) is difficult. If you’re always paying attention to your interactions, it will be easier to catch people showing you their soft skills.
Always be recruiting for your team.
